Biography

Ted Maddess completed his undergraduate degree at the University of British Columbia, where he developed an interest in the diverse optical designs of eyes. In 1981, he joined the Research School of Biological Sciences at Australian National University to pursue a PhD in insect vision. His doctoral research focused on nonlinear adaptive mechanisms in the mammalian visual cortex. Maddess briefly worked at the John Curtin School of Medical Research, where he researched retinal adaptation mechanisms, leading to the invention of a new stimulus for perimetry used in mapping visual field diseases such as glaucoma. This work resulted in patented technologies and has influenced the field of visual health and disease. Since late 2012, he has been associated with the Eccles Institute of Neuroscience at ANU, where he became part of the Canberra area's clinical research consortium. He has directed national research entities such as the ARC Vision Centre, and he is currently involved with the company Konan Medical, developing objective visual field tests. Maddess has received recognition as a Fellow of several professional societies and has a significant number of publications and citations in the field.
