Biography

Ted Tregear is an Associate Professor and English Tutorial Fellow at Merton College, University of Oxford. His research focuses on poetry and drama in early modern England, with a particular interest in the relationship between poetry and philosophy as well as the complexities inherent in reading Shakespeare. He completed his PhD with a thesis titled 'Anthologizing Shakespeare, 1593-1603', published by Oxford University Press in 2023. This work examined five anthologies published between 1599 and 1601, that included excerpts from Shakespeare alongside contemporary writers, providing a new perspective on Shakespeare's impact during his decade in print. In addition to his monograph, Tregear has collaborated on projects exploring metaphysical poetry and its connections to philosophical thought, having published essays in reputable journals such as English Literary History and English Studies. He is involved in ongoing projects supported by the British Academy and has a keen interest in the intersections of early modern lyric and social theory. Tregear teaches several papers covering Shakespeare and the broader literary context from 1550 to 1830 at the University of Oxford, where he actively mentors graduate students in their research pursuits.
