Tejal Desai assumed the role of Sorensen Family Dean of Engineering at Brown University on September 1, 2022. As an accomplished biomedical engineer and academic leader, Desai’s research spans multiple disciplines including materials engineering, cell biology, tissue engineering, and pharmacological delivery systems to develop new therapeutic interventions for various diseases. She aims to design innovative platforms enabled by advances in micro and nanotechnology to overcome current challenges in therapeutic delivery. In 2024, she was elected to the National Academy of Engineering, recognizing her distinguished contributions in nanofabricated materials for controlled biologics delivery and her leadership in the fields of nanotechnology and regenerative medicine. Desai has published over 250 peer-reviewed articles and holds multiple patents, garnering honors such as being named one of Technology Review’s “Top 100 Young Innovators” and Popular Science’s “Brilliant 10.” She has served as the Deborah Cowan Endowed Professor at the University of California, San Francisco, and has been heavily involved in initiatives fostering education and outreach for historically underrepresented groups in STEM. Desai received her B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Brown University in 1994 and her Ph.D. in Bioengineering from UCSF and UC Berkeley in 1998.
