Biography

Professor Mouschovias received his bachelor's degree in physics from Yale University in 1968 and his Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley in 1975. He joined the University of Illinois as an assistant professor of physics and astronomy in 1977. His long-term research goal is to decipher the role of cosmic magnetic fields in star formation. Over the years, his graduate students have made seminal contributions in the field, including solving the angular momentum problem through magnetic braking and the central role of ambipolar diffusion in the fragmentation of molecular clouds. His research group has made pioneering contributions to understanding the role of interstellar dust in star formation and the degree of ionization in evolving molecular clouds, investigating how magnetic fields couple with predominantly neutral matter. He began publishing in 1974 during his time as a graduate student, focusing on the formulation of the theory of star formation while accounting for the influence of cosmic magnetic fields. His calculations have greatly contributed to the understanding of physics surrounding star formation at extremely high densities. Despite challenges, Prof. Mouschovias's predictions have been confirmed by observations, although some have proved contradictory.
