Dr. Tema Milstein

Biography

Tema Milstein's work is in the field of environmental communication, a transdiscipline spanning the social sciences and humanities. She understands communication as a powerful force in our time, particularly concerning human-generated ecological and climatic crises. Milstein is notably recognized for her cultural approaches that study how communication shapes ecological understandings, identities, and actions. Her research tends to highlight discourses that often go unnoticed, as well as the connections between these discourses and wider destructive and restorative practices. Milstein's scholarship includes a significant focus on ecotourism, environmental activism, and the establishment of ecocultural identities. She is a co-editor of the Routledge Handbook of Ecocultural Identity, which gathers contributions from 40 international, interdisciplinary authors. As an Australian Research Council Future Fellow, she is engaged in a project aimed at uncovering ecocultural discourse dimensions regarding popular cetacean watching, striving to advance sustainability awareness and action both in Australia and internationally. Milstein has taught at universities across Australia, the United States, Italy, China, and New Zealand, and is dedicated to transformative ecopedagogy.
