Dr. Temitope Oriola

Biography

Temitope Oriola is an internationally recognized scholar in the fields of criminology and terrorism studies, holding a position as a Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Alberta. His academic journey has been marked by significant contributions to the understanding of policing and the use of force, as well as resource-related conflicts encompassing tactics such as political kidnappings. Oriola has served as a special adviser to the Government of Alberta on the Police Act Review, where his recommendations informed the enactment of the Police Amendment Act in 2022. He was also the Former President of the Canadian Sociological Association and has taken on various editorial roles including Joint Editor-in-Chief of African Security. Throughout his career, Oriola has received numerous awards for his scholarship and public service, including the Governor General of Canada's Academic Gold Medal and the J. Gordin Kaplan Award for Excellence in Research from the University of Alberta. His research is published in esteemed journals, and he is actively engaged in public scholarship through keynotes and media contributions. Oriola's teaching spans several critical courses, including 'Sociology of Terrorism' and 'Power, Inequality and Crime'.
