Tereza Capelos is a Professor of Political Psychology at the University of Southampton, where she studies the psychological processes, mechanisms, and dynamics that explain political behaviour. Her recent work focuses on grievance politics, particularly resentful emotionality and reactionary orientations that determine anti-democratic and authoritarian political preferences. She examines the roles of uncertainty, anxiety, trust, and empathy in the mechanisms leading to polarization versus cooperation during crises and tensions. Capelos is the co-Editor of the Palgrave Global Handbook of Political Psychology and has published articles in leading journals such as Political Psychology and Regulation & Governance. She serves as the co-Convener of the Political Psychology Standing Group of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) and is the President of the International Society of Political Psychology. As a Co-PI of Horizon Europe projects, including PLEDGE and PROTEMO, she investigates the roles of emotions and grievances in democratic governance. Capelos welcomes media engagements to discuss how grievances and emotions impact public opinion, voting preferences, political engagement, and the challenges of democratic engagement.
