Terri Voepel-Lewis is a Professor and Associate Research Scientist at the University of Michigan School of Nursing. Her early clinical research has focused on pain assessment and management among vulnerable populations, particularly children with limited verbal ability. She developed and tested the Faces Leg Activity Cry Consolability (FLACC) observational pain assessment tool, which has supported numerous peer-reviewed publications and facilitated hundreds of clinical pain studies internationally. Currently, her research employs randomized factorial designs to identify latent factors that predict unsafe opioid decisions impacting children and adolescents. She aims to improve multi-modal pain management in vulnerable populations and reduce the risks associated with prescription opioids. Over her career, she has delivered over 60 invited lectures on safe opioid use and has provided mentorship to undergraduate and graduate students as well as junior faculty for over twenty years. Dr. Voepel-Lewis has received numerous awards, including the Blue Cross Blue Shield MI Foundation Student Award and the Friends National Institute of Nursing Research Protégé Award.
