Dr. Young is a molecular geneticist whose faculty position was established in the Faculty of Medicine in 2003. She has developed a CFI-funded research laboratory dedicated to genetics and genomics research targeting unmet medical needs within the Province's unique founder population. Her notable discoveries include identifying a novel gene responsible for a highly lethal form of cardiomyopathy across 24 extended Newfoundland families, attributed to the strong founder effect, and a gene linked to otosclerosis, a common form of conductive hearing loss. Dr. Young's research is continuously funded by CIHR, Genome Canada, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI). She co-leads an infrastructure grant aimed at building the Craig L. Dobbin Genetics Research Centre and has received the President's Award for Outstanding Research from Memorial University and the Community Recognition Award for Advocacy from the Canadian Hard Hearing Association - Newfoundland and Labrador. Dr. Young currently leads a multidisciplinary team exploring the ethical, economic, legal, and social implications of inherited cardiomyopathies and the application of genomics to create products and services for the hearing impaired.
