Dr. Terry De Freitas

Biography

Terry De Freitas is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Alberta. He has been teaching full-time since 2015 and has a strong background in sports medicine, having volunteered with Canada's Olympic Committee and served as physician for various national teams. De Freitas completed his Bachelor of Nursing in 1986 at Dalhousie University and later earned a Bachelor of Science in Medicine and a Medical Doctor degree with honors from the Canadian Academy of Sports Medicine. His clinical interests include sports and exercise medicine, particularly in acute shoulder and knee injuries, as well as concussion management and osteoarthritis treatment. He emphasizes a team-based approach in his therapeutic practices. De Freitas has contributed significantly to academic medicine through numerous presentations and research, including studies on shoulder hydrodilatation and the impact of sex on concussion recovery times. He dedicates his time to teaching medical students and conducting workshops on physical examination skills and musculoskeletal assessments. With over 17 years of practice in rural family medicine, De Freitas combines his clinical expertise with academic responsibilities, aiming to improve patient care and educate future healthcare professionals in the realm of sports medicine.
