Biography

Terry Gill is an Emeritus Professor of Military Law at the University of Amsterdam. He held the chair from September 2001 until September 2020 and has also served as a chair in Military Law at the Netherlands Defence Academy from 2005 to July 2019. He has an extensive academic background, beginning as an Assistant and then Associate Professor of Public International Law at Utrecht University from 1985 to 2013. Gill founded and co-directs the Research Program on Law Armed Conflict and Military Operations (LACMO) at the Amsterdam Centre for International Law and is involved in various international research networks. His research primarily focuses on areas such as international law, the use of force, international humanitarian law, and military operational law. He has published numerous articles and has been actively engaged in editorial roles, including serving as Editor-in-Chief of the Yearbook of International Humanitarian Law from 2012 to 2021. Gill has contributed to significant reports on the conduct of hostilities and has been recognized for his contributions to legal education and research, including being named an 'Officer of the Order of Orange Nassau' in September 2019.
