Dr. Terry Hartig

Biography

Terry Hartig is a Professor at Uppsala University specializing in environmental psychology with a focus on restorative environments. His research explores how living environments affect psychological recovery, especially in relation to home, neighborhoods, and natural settings such as forests. Hartig's career began with studies on restorative environments and nature experiences in the early 1980s. He received degrees from Orange Coast College (Associate of Arts, 1982), University of California at Santa Cruz (Bachelor of Arts, 1984), University of California at Irvine (Master of Arts, 1990; Doctor of Philosophy, 1993), and University of California, Berkeley (Master of Public Health, 1994). After completing postdoctoral training at Berkeley in 1996, he began his tenure at Uppsala University, where he contributed to research at the intersection of environmental psychology, social ecology, and social epidemiology. Hartig has led diverse empirical studies, including both laboratory and field research, addressing fundamental issues related to restorative processes and mechanisms.
