Biography

Terry Lyons is a Professor at the Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford, and a founding member of the Oxford Man Institute of Quantitative Finance. He served as its Director from 2011 to 2015 and has also held leadership roles, including the Director of the Wales Institute of Mathematical and Computational Sciences from 2008 to 2011. Before joining Oxford in 2000, he was a Professor of Mathematics at Imperial College London from 1993 to 2000. He has an extensive academic background, having held the Colin Maclaurin Chair at the University of Edinburgh from 1985 to 1993. His long-term research interests are concentrated on Rough Paths and Stochastic Analysis, particularly in their applications to finance and in developing mathematical tools for modeling high-dimensional systems that exhibit randomness. Lyons's work encompasses a broad range of questions, from pure mathematical problems to efficient numerical calculations. He emphasizes the significance of rigorous mathematical approaches, believing that precise proofs are essential for the reliable development of mathematical ideas. His research also delves into understanding the implications of dynamical systems and geometric measure theory. Lyons actively promotes the importance of mathematical rigor and its application in real-world scenarios, seeking to bridge theoretical mathematics with practical financial challenges.
