Tetsuo Hasegawa is an academic rheumatologist who received his medical degree from Keio University, Japan. He completed his Ph.D. at Osaka University and subsequently participated in a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Cambridge through the Human Frontier Science Program long-term fellowship. In 2024, he was awarded the Kennedy Trust Senior Research Fellowship to start his own research group. His research interests include exploring the common manifestations of joint pain and inflammation in systemic diseases by generating a 3D molecular atlas of the synovium, the membrane of joints. This work investigates how synovial cells and nociceptors interact in the context of diverse systemic pathologies, influencing disease progression and the mechanisms that underlie immune-driven pain in joints. He has received numerous accolades for his work, including the Nikon Joico Award in 2020 and the Young Investigator Award from the Japan College of Rheumatology for the years 2021-2024. His research is supported by several grants from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science.
