Dr. Teun Dekker

Biography

Teun J Dekker, born in 1980, is a Professor of Liberal Arts and Sciences Education at University College Maastricht, focusing on the intersection of Social Sciences and Humanities, History, and Political Thought. His primary responsibilities include conducting theoretical philosophical research about the nature of Liberal Arts education within the European context and its social, political, and educational significance. He actively contributes to the academic community through teaching and management roles at University College Maastricht, fostering the development and dissemination of Liberal Arts philosophy. Dekker is committed to raising public awareness about Liberal Arts education, emphasizing its relevance to the labor market in the Netherlands and Europe. His work includes promoting Liberal Arts education nationally and developing initiatives in collaboration with policymakers and other Liberal Arts programs across the Netherlands and Europe. He holds a bachelor’s degree from University College Utrecht and a master’s and doctorate in Political Theory from St Antony’s College, Oxford University, where his research centered on theories of distributive justice. Additionally, Dekker has served as a Senior Policy Advisor for the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science, and was Vice-Dean for Academic Affairs at University College Maastricht from 2011 to 2018.
