Biography

Teun Tieleman studied classics and philosophy at Utrecht University, where he earned his PhD with the highest distinction in 1992. He has held visiting positions at prestigious institutions including Cambridge University, Novosibirsk State University, UCLA, the Institute of Religion and Critical Inquiry at ACU, and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Since 2001, he has been affiliated with the Department of Philosophy at Utrecht University. His research mainly focuses on the influence of Galen of Pergamum, Stoicism, theories of emotion, and the relationship between ancient medicine, religion, early philosophy, and early Christianity. Tieleman directed the research project 'Human Nature: Medical Philosophical Perspectives on the Work of Galen of Pergamum' funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research from 2015 to 2021. Currently, he is a member of the governing board of the Gravitation-programme 'Anchoring Innovation' and serves as the chair of OIKOS, the national research school for classical studies in the Netherlands.
