Dr. Thanasis Kinias

Biography

Thanasis Kinias is an Assistant Professor in the Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Austin. He specializes in the history of the British Empire, with a particular focus on race and whiteness during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He teaches a variety of courses in British world history, emphasizing themes of empire and colonialism. Dr. Kinias is currently working on a book titled 'Imperial White Space,' which is a revision and expansion of his doctoral dissertation. The book explores how white Britons conceived of Empire as a space for white men on a global scale, particularly in the context of individual settler colonies. In a broader context, the focus includes the Imperial Federation movement, which aimed to create a democratic federal constitution for the Empire that overlooked colonies of non-white settlement. His teaching includes subjects such as Australian history and East Asian history, within the framework of understanding colonial dynamics across different regions.
