Biography

Thekla H. Oechtering, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor and Director of 4D flow MRI at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she also serves as Co-Director of Radius Cardiovascular Imaging. She completed her medical degree at the University of Lübeck in Germany and pursued her residency at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein. In 2024, she received Habilitation, the highest university degree in Germany, signifying her excellence in research and academia. Since joining the Department of Radiology in 2020, she has transitioned from a visiting assistant professor to her current role, focusing on advanced imaging techniques in cardiovascular medicine. Dr. Oechtering is actively involved in the International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, including chairing the Flow Motion Study Group. Her research interests include 4D flow MRI and cardiac MRI, emphasizing collaboration across various departments to enhance the management of cardiovascular diseases with a particular focus on improving diagnostic approaches for postsurgical aortic hemodynamics and portal hypertension. She has received numerous awards, including the Eugenie Felix Wachsmann Innovation Award and the Albers-Schönberg Medal, marking her significant contributions to the field and support for young radiologists.
