Biography

Theo Rasing is a Professor at Radboud University, specializing in Spectroscopy of Solids and Interfaces with a focus on Experimental Solid State Physics. He is known for his expertise in developing new optical techniques for manipulating materials at the molecular nanometer scale. One notable example of his research is the switching and reversing of magnetization using extremely short laser pulses, which has significantly increased the writing speed of computer data by a factor of 1000. Rasing has received the prestigious Spinoza Premium in 2008 and an ERC Advanced Grant in 2013, recognizing his contributions to the field. In recent years, he has worked on making data storage and processing more energy-efficient, drawing inspiration from the brain's mechanisms. His efforts in bringing science to the general public have included participating in educational outreach to schools, and he has also competed for the Academic Annual Prize. In 2019, he was awarded an ERC Synergy Grant in collaboration with German colleagues.
