Theresa S. Mayer is the Vice President for Research at Carnegie Mellon University, providing leadership to the university’s research enterprise and advocating for the role that science, technology, and innovation play nationally and globally. She holds joint faculty appointments in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering in the College of Engineering. Mayer also served as Vice President for Research and Innovation and Professor of Electrical Computer Engineering at Virginia Tech. Before her role at Virginia Tech, she spent over 20 years at Pennsylvania State University as a Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering and Associate Dean for Research and Innovation in the College of Engineering, acting as site director for the NSF's National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network and director of the Materials Research Institute Nanofabrication Laboratory. She is internationally recognized for her research on the applications of nanotechnology in electronic and photonic devices, having made significant contributions to directed self-assembly of nanoparticles and the development of low-power integrated nanosensor circuits. With more than 350 technical publications and eight patents to her name, she has transitioned co-inventions into commercial products. Theresa is a fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and has received numerous awards for her teaching and research, including the NSF CAREER award, and has been a strong supporter of the advancement of women in science and engineering.
