Biography

Theresa Newman is the Charles S. Rhyne Clinical Professor Emerita of Law at Duke University. She has been a part of Duke's legal education since 1990, contributing significantly to the law school as a co-director of the Wrongful Convictions Clinic and as the associate director of the Duke Law School Center for Criminal Justice and Professional Responsibility. Over her distinguished career, Newman has also served as the associate dean for academic affairs from 1999 to 2008. Her dedication to justice reform is evident through her roles as a member of the board of the International Innocence Network and past president of the North Carolina Center on Actual Innocence, an organization she helped establish to assist wrongfully convicted inmates in North Carolina. Additionally, she served on various commissions related to criminal justice in North Carolina. Newman received her JD from Duke in 1988 and has a background in civil litigation, having practiced at Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice before returning to Duke.
