Biography

Therese Frances Mar received her PhD in 1998 from the University of Washington, where she specialized in the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences within the Toxicology Program. Her doctoral research focused on the toxicokinetics of toluene, examining the effects on men and women under both exercising and resting conditions. Following her doctorate, Dr. Mar pursued post-doctoral research in the area of air pollution epidemiology, specifically studying the adverse effects of ambient air pollution on susceptible populations. Currently, she serves as the Director of the Office of Minority Affairs & Diversity at the University of Washington, where she develops strategies to enhance curricula aimed at promoting retention and academic success among underrepresented minority and low-income students. In her role, she collaborates with the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences, teaching courses such as ENVH 105 and promoting the department's programs to targeted student groups. Dr. Mar's research interests include investigating the health effects of air pollution, particularly its implications for vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly, as well as exploring toxicokinetic modeling and the associations between traffic-related air pollutants and health outcomes.
