Thilo Glatzel studied physics at the Free University of Berlin and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona as a recipient of the Minerva Fellowship from the Max Planck Society. He joined the group of Prof. Martha Lux-Steiner in the Department of Solar Energy at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, where he completed his PhD in condensed matter physics, focusing on the implementation of Kelvin probe force microscopy for chalcopyrite-based thin film solar cells in 2003. Glatzel held research positions at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin and Yamanashi University as a JSPS fellow in the Physics Department of the University of Basel since 2005, working in the force microscopy group of Prof. E. Meyer. His research emphasizes the opto-electronic properties of nanometer-scale structures and materials, particularly the single molecule characterization. Glatzel has been elected as an Executive Board member of Beilstein Journal Nanotechnology and has edited books on Kelvin probe force microscopy in the Surface Science series for Springer, while organizing international conferences. In 2017, he received the venia docendi in physics from the University of Basel.
