Biography

Thomas Abrams is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Queen's University. His research interests include Health Illness, Disability Studies, Qualitative Health Research, and Sociological Theory. His work often focuses on empirical research projects, including a historical study of disability policy in Canada and France, which explores how disabled individuals navigate freedom in various contexts from the 1970s to the present day. Currently, he is engaged in a SSHRC-funded qualitative study investigating disabled technology users' experiences in the realm of romance. In addition to these projects, he collaborates with qualitative researchers in health and social sciences to address issues of disability quality of participation and community-based care in a global context. He has a diverse educational background, having completed his Ph.D. in Sociology at Carleton University and previously holding postdoctoral positions at OISE, University of Toronto, and Dalhousie University. He commenced his role at Queen's University in 2018 and is accepted graduate students interested in the domains of disability studies and sociological theory. His upcoming sabbatical in 2023/2024 marks a new chapter of teaching courses at various academic levels in Sociology and Disability Studies.
