Thomas Emil Andersen is a Professor at the University of Southern Denmark, specializing in Clinical Microbiology. He leads the Andersen Lab, focusing on translating clinical experimental research into new treatment regimens, diagnostic assays, and medical devices through collaborations with hospital departments and industry partners. Andersen's research career began with studying gas-phase fragmentation of oligonucleotides using mass spectrometry during his MSc project. He has held significant positions such as project coordinator at Nanon A/S and NKT Research, and he conducted his industrial PhD in collaboration with Odense University Hospital and the Interdisciplinary Nano Science Center at Aarhus University. In 2010, he returned to academia to conduct postdoctoral research at the University of Southern Denmark, where he coordinated contributions to large hospital-industry innovation projects aimed at developing biocompatible medical device materials to combat infections. His postdoc work established novel infection models based on human cell-bacteria co-cultures which form the foundation of his research group’s platform. In early 2020, he and his colleague established a laboratory for culturing viruses to monitor COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness and to help develop antiviral drugs.
