Biography

Dr. Barnwell grew up in Florida and attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned his Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Ph.D. degrees in 1965, 1967, and 1970 respectively. At MIT, he developed a speech synthesis-by-rule system and a reading machine. Dr. Barnwell joined Georgia Tech in 1971 and retired in 2006 after a notable 35-year career. He played a major role in establishing the Digital Signal Processing Group in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department, which is recognized as one of the finest in the world. Dr. Barnwell is an internationally recognized leader in speech coding and digital signal processing, having authored numerous research papers and books, and receiving multiple awards for his contributions in research, education, and entrepreneurship.
