Professor Dr. Thomas Baumgartner

Biography

Thomas Baumgartner is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Science, specializing in main-group and organic materials chemistry, with a focus on sustainable energy applications. He holds a Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) and leads a research program that emphasizes the synthesis and advanced characterization of phosphorus-containing, smart functional organic materials. His multidisciplinary approach integrates techniques from organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry, particularly in the synthesis of molecular materials for organic electronics, including Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs), Organic Photovoltaic Cells (OPVs), and organic batteries. Furthermore, Professor Baumgartner investigates the enhancement of solid-state performance through the formation of supramolecular nanomaterials. He is also engaged in developing novel catalytic processes aimed at sustainable energy, relevant to solar fuels. His work contributes to the United Nations goals of Affordable Clean Energy and Climate Action.
