Dr. Thomas Benfield

Biography

Thomas Benfield, MD, DMSc, is a prominent figure in the field of infectious diseases, associated with the University of Copenhagen since 2014. He holds dual roles as a professor and consultant at the Department of Infectious Diseases, Copenhagen University Hospital – Amager Hvidovre, where he has served since 2007. He has directed clinical research in the department and has been the editor-in-chief of the Danish Medical Journal since 2021. Benfield's extensive academic background began with his medical degree from the University of Copenhagen in 1992, followed by a doctoral degree in medical science (DMSc) in 2003. His research interests include basic clinical research focused on HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, sepsis, and pneumonia, contributing to over 30 randomized clinical trials. He has had a significant role in clinical trials as both a primary investigator and sponsor, emphasizing his contributions to the study of infectious diseases. Benfield has received several prestigious awards, including the Hartmann Prize and the Danish Medical Association Honour Prize in 2021. He has secured over three million euros in research grants over the past five years, highlighting his impact and recognition in the field. With a commitment to mentoring, he has supervised numerous PhD and bachelor students throughout his career, significantly contributing to the academic community.
