Biography

Thomas Bernauer is a professor of political science at ETH Zurich’s Department of Humanities, Social Political Sciences (D-GESS). He leads a research group within the Center for Comparative International Studies (CIS), a collaboration between ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich, and is affiliated with the Einstein School of Public Policy. Bernauer obtained his doctorate from the University of Zurich in 1992 and has a rich background in international governance, having worked as a researcher at the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) in Geneva, and later as a postdoctoral researcher at Harvard University. He has held various positions, being appointed as an assistant professor in 1995, then advancing to associate professor in 1999, and finally achieving full professorship in 2004. Bernauer has also contributed significantly to national research initiatives as a former member of the Swiss National Science Foundation’s Research Council. His research is concentrated on international environmental cooperation and the political dimensions that shape it, and he has published extensively, including over 200 articles and 12 books. His courses include topics such as Political Economy and Designing Public Policy Research, among others.
