Biography

Professor Thomas Brück's research focuses on sustainable production of specialty platform chemicals from biomass residues. His core competencies include microbial cultivation, designing artificial metabolic pathways, synthetic systems biology, and bioprocess development using production platforms such as E. coli, yeast, and microalgae. He manages the TUM-AlgaeTec Center, which enables algae cultivation using sophisticated climate simulations. He studied Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Molecular Medicine at Keele University in the UK and conducted his PhD studies in Biochemistry at Imperial College and the University of Greenwich. His academic career includes significant contributions to marine natural product biochemistry at the Centre of Excellence for Biomedical and Marine Biotechnology at Florida Atlantic University. In 2006, he joined Süd-Chemie AG, where he held high-level research and managerial positions, and in 2011 he became a professor in the field of synthetic biotechnology and sustainability at the Technical University of Munich.
