Biography

Thomas Chen is a professor in the Department of Mathematics at The University of Texas at Austin. He earned Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Theoretical Mathematical Physics from ETH Zurich in 1999 and 2001, respectively. Prior to joining UT Austin in 2008, Chen held academic positions at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University and at Princeton University as an assistant professor. He served as the chair of the Department of Mathematics from 2017 to 2024. His research interests include renormalization group methods, spectral dynamical problems in quantum field theory, and the mathematical foundations of deep learning, specifically the interpretability problem. Chen's work also explores scaling limits in quantum dynamics, nonlinear partial differential equations, and Hamiltonian dynamics. He has published extensively in these areas, contributing to understanding the mathematical framework necessary for advancements in statistical and machine learning. Chen continues to be a prominent figure in his field, influencing both theoretical development and practical applications.
