Dr. Thomas Diprete

Biography

Thomas DiPrete is the Giddings Professor of Sociology at Columbia University and serves as the Director of the Institute of Social and Economic Research and Policy. He has a B.S. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. DiPrete has also held faculty positions at the University of Chicago, Duke University, and the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His research interests encompass social stratification, demography, education, economic sociology, and quantitative methodology, with a particular focus on comparative research. His research appointments include prestigious institutions such as the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin and the Social Science Research Center in Berlin. DiPrete's recent projects investigate gender differences in educational performance, the factors that affect college persistence and dropout rates in the U.S., the educational expansion, and the structures linking education to the labor market in terms of their contribution to earnings inequality across industrialized nations. Furthermore, he studies the social comparison processes that impact compensation among corporate executives.
