Biography

Thomas Finholt is a professor and the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Budgetary Affairs at the University of Michigan. He joined the faculty in 1991 as an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology and has held various faculty appointments in the School of Information since 1997, including Assistant Research Scientist and Professor. Throughout his career, Finholt has taken on multiple administrative roles within the School of Information, such as Associate Dean for Research Innovation and Senior Associate Dean for Faculty and Academic Affairs. He was appointed Dean in April 2016. His priorities as Dean include expanding online course offerings, diversifying the pipeline for information technology employment, and enhancing civic engagement through research initiatives. He co-founded and directs the Collaboratory for Research in Electronic Work (CREW), which has been at the forefront of studying human-computer interaction in organizational contexts. His recent research focuses on developing strategies for augmented, virtual, and mixed reality across the campus and advancing sports analytics in collaboration with U-M Athletics. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Swarthmore College and a Ph.D. in Social Decision Science from Carnegie Mellon University.
