Biography

Thomas Gernon obtained a B.Sc. (Hons) in Geology from University College Dublin and a Ph.D. in Physical Volcanology from the University of Bristol, studying under Prof Sir Steve Sparks. He held a postdoctoral position at the University of Bristol from 2007 to 2008, focusing on the geology of Snap Lake Kimberlite in Arctic Canada. He was a Lecturer in Geology at Trinity College Dublin from 2008 to 2009, before joining the University of Southampton as a Lecturer in Earth Science, where he was promoted to Associate Professor in 2016. In 2018 and 2021, he was named a Turing Fellow. Gernon has led and co-authored 60 peer-reviewed papers in international scientific journals and has delivered 50 lectures at international conferences, workshops, seminars, and public talks. His research interests lie in understanding solid Earth drivers of the Earth's climate state and Earth surface processes, with active projects exploring continental breakup and the deep carbon cycle.
