Thomas Godwin is a professor of practice in accounting at the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management, part of the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business. He joined Cornell after serving as an assistant professor of accounting at Purdue University. Godwin earned his Ph.D. in accounting from Purdue University and holds both a master's and a bachelor's degree in accounting from Clemson University. He is a licensed CPA in New York and South Carolina and holds the CGMA designation from AICPA. Before entering academia, Godwin had extensive experience in consulting and compliance with a national public accounting firm, primarily working with private equity clients. He continues to work as a consultant and editor for Becker CPA Review. His writing has been published in prominent outlets such as Tax Notes, the Journal of Accountancy, Tax Adviser, eJournal Taxation, and the Journal of Taxation. At Cornell, he teaches financial accounting, tax, audit, and fraud courses for both undergraduate and graduate students, and conducts executive education for some of the world's largest hedge funds. Godwin is also co-director of the Cornell LITLAP program, which provides free tax compliance services to low-income taxpayers in Tompkins County, New York. He has received numerous awards for his research, teaching, and community engagement, including the 2024 SC Johnson Dean’s Distinguished Award for Societal Impact Teaching.
