Biography

Thomas grew up in rural Southwestern Ontario and developed an interest in the natural sciences from an early age. He gravitated towards plant sciences, combining this with his concern for environmental issues. He studied at the University of Guelph, earning his BSc in Environmental Sciences, followed by an MSc in Horticulture and a PhD in Environmental Biology. After completing a NASA Post-Doctoral Fellowship at Kennedy Space Center, Thomas returned to the University of Guelph as the R&D Manager for the Controlled Environment Systems Research Facility (CESRF). He develops a diverse research program focusing on Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA), including water remediation and medicinal crops. His work aims to address societal challenges such as food insecurity and agricultural resiliency in the face of climate change. Thomas has significant experience in using plants as part of bioregenerative life-support systems for human space exploration and collaborates with agencies like NASA and various agricultural organizations. He is actively involved in mentoring graduate students, promoting a hands-on learning approach within his lab.
