Thomas M. Grist, MD, FACR, received his undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering from Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI, in 1981 and completed his medical degree at the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1985. He finished his radiology residency at Duke University in Durham, NC, in 1991 and subsequently joined the faculty of the Department of Radiology at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI. Between 2005 and 2023, Grist served as Chair of the Department of Radiology, during which time the department expanded significantly, including 85 faculty, 20 fellows, and 32 residents with an annual budget of $75 million. He collaborated closely with colleagues in Medical Physics to establish the Imaging Sciences Center at the Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research, a 50,000 sq. ft. facility dedicated to the advancement of imaging technologies for clinical practice. Grist has published extensively, with 3 books, 15 book chapters, and over 150 peer-reviewed articles, and has been awarded 16 patents. A member of various professional organizations, including the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM) and the Radiologic Society of North America (RSNA), he has also been honored as a Fellow of the American Heart Association, ISMRM, and the American College of Radiology. Grist's research interests lie in the development and application of advanced magnetic resonance imaging techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of human diseases, focusing primarily on cardiovascular disorders.
