Dr. Thomas Hammer

Biography

Thomas Hammer is a prominent figure in the field of sustainable regional landscape development, focusing on sustainability transformations at local and regional levels. He has extensive experience in managing significant projects related to sustainable development, including overseeing the Head Bachelor Master Minor Sustainable Development program since July 2022, and previously chairing the CAS in Sustainable Development until the end of 2021. His work has emphasized sustainable quality of life and the significance of protected areas on a national scale. Hammer has conducted evaluations for Regional Nature Parks of National Importance in the Canton of Bern between 2018 and 2020. He possesses field experience in various Alpine regions and several countries in West Africa, including Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Niger, and Mauritania. Hammer has also been actively involved in academic and professional organizations, including the international Network for New Regional Development and the German Society of Geography (DGfG). He was a board member of the Swiss Geography Association from 2005 to 2015 and served on the Nature Conservation Commission for the Canton of Bern from 2004 to 2015.
