Biography

Thomas M. Hart is an infectious disease microbiologist focused on studying the molecular mechanisms by which Lyme disease bacteria infect humans and cause disease. His research examines how Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease, transitions from tick vectors to mammalian hosts. This transition exposes the bacteria to new environmental pressures and immune system responses that they must navigate in order to colonize new tissues. Dr. Hart explores the ways in which Lyme Borrelia sense and adapt to these pressures, with the goal of identifying new targets for vaccines and therapeutics to combat Lyme disease. He is affiliated with the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University.
