Thomas Hawker-Dawson is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Cambridge. His research focuses on the communicative aspects of punishment within criminal law. His PhD, funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), was entitled 'Punishment communication: perceptions of penal messages and sentencing'. This empirical project involved observations of sentencing interviews with Crown Court judges, exploring how sentencing can serve as a 'teachable moment' and the use of the term 'censure' in punishment theories, all aimed at enhancing the legitimacy and effectiveness of sentencing. Thomas previously taught Criminology at Anglia Ruskin University and supervised M.Phil students in the innovative 'Learning Together' course for residents of HMP Grendon. He has also contributed to the Texas Defender Service, working to combat systemic flaws in the Texas death penalty system.
