Dr. Thomas Hayden

Biography

Thomas Hayden is the Director of the Master of Arts in Earth Systems, Environmental Communication Program at Stanford University, where he teaches environmental communication journalism within the School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences. Joining Stanford in 2008, Hayden has a career rich in journalism focused on science and environmental issues, contributing to numerous national and international publications. His journalism career commenced at Newsweek in New York, before transitioning to News & World Report in Washington, D.C., where he served as a senior writer covering pivotal topics in science and medicine. A freelance journalist since 2005, his work includes features for prominent outlets like Wired and National Geographic. Notably, he co-authored the bestselling book "Call to Arms" on battlefield medicine in Iraq and contributed to the critically acclaimed "Sex on the Warfront." Additionally, Hayden was the lead writer on the National Geographic Atlas of the World and has published a collaborative work titled "Science Writers' Handbook." With a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from the University of Saskatchewan and a Master’s degree in Marine Biology from USC, his academic expertise is underscored by extensive oceanographic research. He has also significantly contributed to the launch of an innovative graduate degree program at Stanford focused on effective communication regarding complex environmental issues, aiming to engage nonspecialist audiences.
