Biography

Dr. Thomas M. Hemmerling received his MD Degree from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Saarland in Germany in 1980. He is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at McGill University, and also holds an affiliation with the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Montreal. Dr. Hemmerling is the Head of the Research Committee Chair at the Society for Technology in Anesthesia and serves as an Associate Editor for the section on Technology in the Anesthesia & Analgesia Journal. He founded the ITAG (Intelligent Technologies Anesthesia Group) laboratory at McGill University in 2006, dedicating his research to the development of advanced biomedical technologies. His current focus includes artificial intelligence, simulation, and robotics in medicine. Dr. Hemmerling supervises several master's and PhD students, emphasizing the importance of understanding AI in medical contexts. He is also known for sponsoring the SteigerKI award that helps high school students in Germany to understand AI and develop their own projects.
