Biography

Thomas Irvine is a global historian specializing in music from 1500 CE to the present. His current research focuses on global music history, historical sound studies, and the application of machine learning techniques within jazz music. He is the author of 'Listening China: Sound Sino-Western Encounter 1770-1839' published by the University of Chicago Press in 2020, and co-editor of 'Dreams Germany: Musical Imaginaries Concert Hall Dance Floor' with Neil Gregor, released by Berghahn in 2019. As a leader of the Turing Fellowship project 'Jazz Social Machine' at the Alan Turing Institute, he is engaged in projects that examine global history's intersection with art and vernacular music. His educational background includes studying viola across several institutions, culminating in a PhD from Cornell University in 2005, where he also completed postdoctoral research under the DAAD scholarship at the University of Würzburg. Since joining the University of Southampton in 2006, Irvine has contributed significantly to the field, promoting the understanding of music sustainability and the complexities of music within the context of the British Empire and jazz history.
