Biography

Thomas Kohler is an Associated Senior Research Scientist at the Centre for Development and Environment (CDE) at the University of Bern. His research interests include local development, livelihoods, household strategies, small-scale farming, and mountain research development. He focuses on the use of GIS and Earth Observation technologies in cartography and environmental studies. Kohler has led numerous projects, including the Mekong Watershed Classification Project and the Sustainable Land Management Programme in Eritrea. He has extensive field experience in countries such as Kenya, Eritrea, the Greater Mekong Region, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Nepal, and Iceland. Fluent in German, English, French, and Swahili, he actively participates in international discussions on sustainable development in mountain regions and is affiliated with various networks, including the International Mountain Society and the Mountain Forum.
