Biography

Thomas Evan Levy is a distinguished professor at the University of California, San Diego, holding the Norma Kershaw Chair in Archaeology. With a PhD from the University of Sheffield obtained in 1981, he is a member of the Department of Anthropology and the Judaic Studies Program. He leads the Cyber-archaeology research group at the Qualcomm Institute, California Center of Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2). Levy's research interests encompass Levantine archaeology, particularly the technological aspects of early mining and metallurgy, social evolution, and the origins of sedentism and domestication of plants and animals during the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period. He has published extensively, including 12 books and over a hundred scholarly articles, and received the 2011 Lowell Thomas Award for his contributions to the field. He has also been involved in significant archaeological projects in Israel and Jordan, receiving funding from notable organizations including the National Geographic Society and the National Endowment for the Humanities. His recent works focus on the intersection of archaeology and technology, as well as issues of cultural heritage diagnostics.
