Biography

Thomas V O'Halloran is a Foundation Professor in the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Microbiology, Genetics, & Immunology at Michigan State University. His research program focuses on the discovery of soluble metal receptor proteins and the pathways that participate in the mechanisms regulating cellular events in the physiology of organisms. His research group adopts a highly interdisciplinary approach to elucidate the chemical mechanisms, protein structures, biochemistry, and physiology of metal receptors. This work has led to the discovery of novel families of factors that control gene expression in response to changes in metal ion concentrations, specifically through metalloregulatory proteins. Collaborating with colleagues at Johns Hopkins, he uncovered a class of proteins known as metallochaperone proteins, which govern metal flow within cells. His studies demonstrate how cells manage transition element quotas in both normal and disease states, providing vital insights into cellular function and health.
