Biography

Professor Thomas D. Otto is an expert in computational biology, with a research focus on infectious diseases, particularly pathogen genomics and host-pathogen interactions. His mission is to utilize interdisciplinary approaches to tackle global infectious disease challenges, spanning genome sequencing, single-cell omics, computational tool development (including machine learning), and applications exploring pathogen evolution. He began his career with a minor in bioinformatics at the University of Lübeck, and his early work included developing machine learning methods for analyzing biomedical data. After completing his PhD at the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz in Rio de Janeiro, he specialized in next-generation sequencing at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, significantly contributing to tools and pipelines widely used in the field. Since joining the University of Glasgow in 2017, his research has focused on single-cell sequencing technologies applied to immunology and microbiology. He has established extensive collaboratory projects, particularly in Africa, and holds an honorary lecturer position at the University of Ghana.
