Thomas J. Pence is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Michigan State University, where he is engaged in research and student supervision in the area of nonlinear solid mechanics. His research interests include analytical computational modeling, highly deformable solids—such as rubbers, polymers, gels, tissues, biotissue, and complex soft media—failure composites, shape memory stents, and soft tissue biomechanics. Pence earned his Ph.D. at the California Institute of Technology and has held postdoctoral appointments at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Paris-Orsay. He has served as a visiting professor during sabbatical appointments at the University of Rome and the University of Glasgow. He is a member of the United States National Committee for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics and serves on the editorial board for various publications, including the Journal of Elasticity and the International Journal of Solids and Structures. Pence organized the 17th U.S. National Congress on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics.
