Biography

Professor Thomas Povey is a Tutorial Fellow at University College and a Tacchi Fellow in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford. He completed his BA and MA in Physics at St Catherine’s College, Oxford, and went on to earn his DPhil in Engineering Science with a focus on Turbomachinery at the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre. In 2004, he was appointed as a Tutorial Fellow and later took on the Tacchi Fellowship in 2008, becoming a full Professor in 2014. Professor Povey has chaired an influential research group that has pioneered measurement techniques in metal effectiveness and cooling optimization. He has published around 130 peer-reviewed papers and holds 12 patents related to gas turbine technologies. He also founded Oxford Flow, a company specializing in high-performance pressure regulators for the water and gas industries, which has received multiple industry awards. Additionally, he authored a mathematics and physics book for pre-university students that has sold over 40,000 copies worldwide. His research interests include Turbine Performance, Nozzle Guide Vane Cooling Optimization, and advanced measurement techniques for high-speed flows.
