Dr. Thomas Risse

Biography

Thomas Risse is a senior professor in the Excellence Cluster "Contestations of the Liberal Script (SCRIPTS)" at the Freie Universität Berlin, where he previously held the position of Professor of International Politics and Director of the Working Group on Transnational Relations, Foreign, and Security Policy at the Otto Suhr Institute of Political Science. He completed his doctorate at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt in 1987. His academic career includes significant roles at institutions such as the European University Institute in Florence, Cornell University, Harvard University, Yale University, Stanford University, the University of Wyoming, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He received the prestigious Max Planck Research Prize for International Cooperation in 2003 and was awarded the Juan Linz Prize by the International Political Science Association in 2021. Risse has been involved in various academic projects related to research and teaching, including directing the Berlin Center for Research and Graduate Training and the Berlin Graduate School Global Transregional Studies. He has published extensively in international relations and governance, contributing significantly to discussions on power dynamics and public spheres in transnational contexts.
